David Aldarondo Nacido en Agudilla, Puerto Rico. El Representante David Aldarondo fue elegido a la asamblea general de Connecticut en el 2004. El representa al Distrito #75 en Waterbury. Aldarondo está ahora en su cuarto término como Representante en el estado de Connecticut. El es miembro de los Comités de Envejecientes, Legislativo y Ejecutivo. Aldarondo recibió su diploma de Bachiller de Artes de la Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico. Antes de asumir como Representante, David trabajaba como educador en la ciudad de Waterbury. Actualmente reside en la misma ciudad junto a su esposa Joanna y sus dos hijos, David y Sara.

Born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Rep. David Aldarondo was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly in 2004. He represents the 75th district in Waterbury. Aldarondo is now on his 4th term as Representative in the state of Connecticut. He is a member of the Aging; Executive and Legislative Nominations; and Insurance and Real Estate Committees. Aldarondo received his Bacherlor of Arts degree from the Interamericana University of Puerto Rico. Before taking his place as Representative of the district of Waterbury, David was an educator in the same city. He currently resides in Waterbury with his wife Joanna and two children David and Sara.

Werner Oyanadel Werner Oyanadel nació y creció en Santiago, Chile. Actualmente es el Director Ejecutivo Interino de la Comisión de Asuntos Latinos y Puertorriqueños (LPRAC), una agencia independiente no partidista de política pública dentro de la Asamblea General de Connecticut. Está a cargo de la administración e implementación de políticas y programas de la Comisión, creando recomendaciones legislativas y sugiriendo cambios a favor de la comunidad Latina. Previo a trabajar para LPRAC, sirvió como Asistente Legislativo a varios miembros de la Cámara de Representantes y aceptó una oferta del Senado Estatal para trabajar como Asistente Legislativo del Senador Donald E. Williams Jr.  Oyanadel posee un Bachillerato en Ciencias Políticas y un grado en Psicología. Fue miembro de la Guardia Nacional de Connecticut como Especialista en Logística Automatizada y Gerente de Programas de Énfasis en Hispanos. Recibió un reconocimiento por haberse enlistado en el servicio por dos ocasiones y ha recibido diversos Premios de parte de: Demos & DemocracyWorks – Champion of Democracy Award(2005), ex Gobernadora M. Jodi Rell - Immigrant of the Year Award(2005), National Image, Inc. – Meritorious Service Award(2004), entre otros. Werner y su esposa, Luz Marina González, residen en West Hartford con su hijastro, Miguel.

Werner Oyanadel was born and grew up in Santiago, Chile. He is currently the Acting Executive Director of the Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission (LPRAC), a non-partisan independent agency of public policy within the General Assembly of Connecticut. He is in charge of the Administration and implementation of policies and programs of the Commission, creating legislative recommendations, and suggesting changes in favor of the Latino community. Prior to working for LPRAC, he served as Legislative Assistant to several members of the House of Representatives and accepted an offer of the State Senate to work as Assistant legislative of the Senator Donald e. Williams Jr. Oyanadel has a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a degree in Psychology. He was a member of the Connecticut National Guard as specialist on automated logistics and Manager of programs focus on Hispanics. He received a recognitions by have been enlisted in the service in two occasions and has received various awards from part of: Demos & DemocracyWorks - Champion of Democracy Award (2005), former Governor M. Jodi Rell - Immigrant of the Year Award (2005), National Image, Inc. - Meritorious Service Award (2004), among others. Werner and his wife, Luz Marina González, reside in West Hartford with his stepson, Miguel.

Robert Sanchez Robert Sánchez fue electo a la Asamblea General de Connecticut en el 2011, representando el Distrito 25 de New Britain. El es un líder de varios años en la comunidad de su ciudad. Actualmente es miembro de la Junta de Educación de New Britain, donde él ha sido una voz importante en busca de una educación de calidad y una administración eficiente. Bobby, como así lo llaman habitualmente,  es también conocido por su trabajo en el Human Resources Agency of New Britain Inc, donde sus esfuerzos han ayudado a lograr un programa de nivel en la educación de New Britain. Durante sus años de servicio él ha establecido relaciones fuertes con familias, profesionales y líderes locales, a la vez de mantener  un nivel extraordinario de compromiso, respeto y dedicación. Además,  ha servido en diferentes organizaciones locales y Juntas, como Ciudadanos para la Acción en New Britain, the Federal Housing Residents Council, Comité Demócrata de la Ciudad, la Comisión de Derechos Humanos de su ciudad y fue seleccionado por la Municipalidad de New Britain para servir en City’s Housing Coalition Board. Sánchez está casado con Nebeska Sánchez y tiene a un hijo Lawrence. Bobby es Bachiller y graduado de Springfield College

Robert Sanchez was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly in 2011 representing the 25th Assembly District in New Britain. Sanchez is a longtime leader in the New Britain community. He is currently a member of the New Britain Board of Education, where he has been a strong voice for quality education and efficient administration. Bobby is also well known for his work at the Human Resources Agency of New Britain Inc, where his efforts have helped make for a strong Head Start education program in New Britain. Bobby is presently a case manager and fatherhood initiative coordinator with the Human Resources Agency. Through the years he has built strong relationships with families, professionals and local leaders in New Britain where he maintains an extraordinary level of commitment, respect and dedication. Additionally, he has served on different local organizations and boards such as: Citizens for Action in New Britain, the Federal Housing Residents Council, the New Britain Democratic Town Committee, the New Britain Human Rights Commission and was selected by the City’s Town Council to serve on the City’s Housing Coalition Board. He is married to Nebeska Sanchez and has a son Lawrence. Bobby holds a Bachelors and graduate degree from Springfield College.

Awilda Reasco Natural de San German, Puerto Rico, Awilda posee un diploma de bachiller en Psicología de CCSU y un Masterado de Trabajos Sociales de UCONN. Ella es actualmente la directora de Servicios de Acceso y Pre-Colegiales (PAS) en la Universidad de Central Connecticut. PAS ofrece programas educacionales y de preparación para los estudios universitarios. Ella fue la primera mujer hispana en ser Coordinadora del programa preparatorio Connecticut Collegiate Awareness. En adición a sus logros, Reasco ha también servido como consejera de la Asociación de Estudiantes Latinos en Central (LASO) y fue la primera mujer hispana en ser moderadora de los votantes de la ciudad de New Britain. Ella frecuentemente da discursos en colegios, universidades, iglesias y organizaciones comunitarias. Awilda ha recibido varios premios incluyendo el Outstanding Club Advisor Awards, Premio a su Servicio con la Juventud del distrito de Hartford, YWCA Women in Leadership award, CONNCAP y el EOP Service award entre otros.

A native of San German Puerto Rico, Awilda Reasco has a B.A. in Psychology, from CCSU and an M.S.W. from UCONN. She currently serves as director for Pre-Collegiate and Access Services, PAS at Central Connecticut State University. PAS houses Educational Opportunity Program and Connecticut Collegiate Awareness and Preparation Program. She was the first Hispanic woman to serve as the Site-Coordinator of the Connecticut Collegiate Awareness Preparation Program. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Reasco serves as an advisor to the Latino Association Student Organization and was the first Hispanic woman to become a moderator to register voters in the City of New Britain. She frequently speaks at schools, universities, churches and community organizations on career topics and risk diversity issues. Mrs. Reasco has received several awards including Outstanding Club Advisor Awards, Youth Service Award for the Diocese of Hartford, YWCA Women in Leadership Award, CONNCAP and EOP Service Award among others.

Christina DeJesus-Kishimoto Nació en Nueva York y es de padres Puertorriqueños. Graduada de Columbia University en Ciencias Políticas, Inglés y Literatura, tiene una Maestría de la Universidad de Connecticut. Se crió en el Bronx con muchos latinos y afroamericanos. Su decisión de venir a Connecticut fue porque le aceptaron en un programa de UConn y trabajó cerca del presidente de la Universidad haciendo un plan estratégico que reorientó el uso de millonarios recursos. Hizo su tésis de doctorado sobre Hartford y su nivel educativo. Trabajó en el Departamento de Educación del Estado ayudando al sistema de Hartford, eso le sirvió para que el Superintendente Henry la convocara para trabajar en el sistema de Hartford en el 2005. Hasta hace poco era la encargada de rediseñar las escuelas de Hartford, impulsando un sistema de selección para favorecer a los padres y la ubicación de sus trabajos. También fue la mentora del programa de preparación de los estudiantes de los grados últimos en las mismas universidades por convenios con ellos. En Marzo del 2011 ante la partida del Superintendente Adamowski, la Junta de Educación la nombró como nueva Superintendente de las Escuelas de Hartford y asumió en Julio pasado.

Born in New York of Puerto Rican parents. Christina graduated from Columbia University with degrees in Political Science, English and Literature. She did her masters at the University of Connecticut. Raised in the Bronx with many Latinos and African Americans. Her decision to come to Connecticut was because she was accepted at a program in Uconn which allowed her to work close to the president of the university working on a strategic plan that redistributed millions in resources. She did her Doctorate thesis about Hartford and its level of education. Worked for the state’s Department of Education helping the Hartford school system, which helped her to get a position in the Hartford System of Schools in 2005. Until recently she was in charge of redesigning the schools of Hartford, pushing for a selection system that favors parents with their job locations. Was also a mentor for a program that prepared students for college. In March of 2011, after the departure of Superintendent Adamowski, the Board of Education selected her as the new Superintendent of Schools in Hartford and she assumed the position in July.

Wilfredo Nieves Nació en Nueva York y es de padres puertorriqueños. Es graduado en Matemáticas de Kean University de New Jersey, tiene una Maestría en Educación de Columbia University de Nueva York y otra en Psicología de Rutger de New Jersey. Tiene una larga experiencia de trabajar en los Community College, por 23 años estuvo en Essex County College en Newark, New Jersey desempeñando distintas funciones, luego en Baltimore City Community College y los últimos  diez años fue presidente del Middlesex Community College en Middletown, Connecticut. En Julio del 2010 fue designado como presidente de la popular Capital Community College que alberga a más de 8,000 estudiantes, con un tercio de origen hispano. Le tocó una época en la que muchos alumnos por cuestiones económicas han decidido aplicar para C.C.C. y han tenido que hacer esfuerzos para poder recibir a la mayoría. Tiene convenios con las universidades del Estado para que los créditos de sus estudiantes sean aceptados y que muchos con grado asociado puedan continuar las especialidades que deseen. También en este periodo ha buscado la manera de financiar el estudio de muchos latinos que necesitan ayuda y él dice que siempre está dispuesto a escuchar a los jóvenes.

Born in New York of Puerto Rican parents. He is a graduate of Mathematics at the Kean University in New Jersey. He holds a Masters degree in Education from Columbia University in New York and another in Psychology from Rutger in New Jersey.  He has a long experience of working at the Community Colleges; for 23 years was at Essex County College en Newark, New Jersey playing different roles, then in Baltimore City Community College and during the last 10 years was President of the Middlesex Community College in Middletown, CT.  In July 2010 he was selected as the President of the Capital Community College, home of more of 8,000 students, with one-third of Hispanic origin.  It was a time when many students for economic reasons have decided to apply for CCC and had make efforts to receive the majority.  He has agreements with state universities for student’s credits are accepted and that many with associate degree may continue their studies. Also in this period has been looking ways to fund the study of many Latinos who need help and he said is willing to listen to young people.

Lyzbeth Ramos Lyzbeth Ramos “La Nena de la Bachata” es una cantante independiente que acaba de lanzar su primer álbum “Eso es parte de la vida”, que fue producido y arreglado por De León Mártires, productor dominicano quien también fue el productor del dúo Monchy y Alexandra. Grabado en estudios de la República dominicana, Nueva York, y CT (Trod Nossell Studios). El álbum contiene 13 canciones, de las cuales 10 son canciones originales. Ella recientemente hizo un viaje de promoción a Puerto Rico, donde visitó y fue entrevistada por varias emisoras de radio y programas de televisión, incluyendo el popular programa de Wapa TV, “Entre Nosotras”. Ella sigue promoviendo su primer sencillo “Amor de Historia” y ha sido entrevistada por varias emisoras de radio, y en la televisión por Telemundo. También ha sido entrevistada y presentada por muchos periódicos. Lyzbeth tiene una banda profesional y bailarines y está lista y disponible para presentaciones. Ella es un natural de Meriden, Connecticut, de familia Puertorriqueña.Lyzbeth es una cantante con experiencia que ha actuado en espectáculos como Vale Mas con Marcano, Voces en Funcion con Loubriel en P.R. y en Sábado Gigante de Don Francisco por Univision, en Florida. Ha ganado también en el Festival de Canción y Voz en Puerto Rico como mejor canción, cuando ella tenía sólo 16 años.

Lyzbeth Ramos “La Nena de la Bachata” is a independent singer who just released her first album “Eso es parte de la vida”. The album was produced and arranged by Mártires De León, well-known Dominican producer and who was also the producer of the duo Monchy & Alexandra. Recorded in studios in Dominican Republic, New York, and CT (Trod Nossell Studios), Lyzbeth’s album contains 13 songs, of which 10 are original songs. She recenty did a promo tour in Puerto Rico, where she visited and was interviewed by various radio stations and TV shows, including the popular Wapa TV show “Entre Nosotras”. She continues to promote her first single “Amor de Historia” and she has been interviewed by various radio stations, Telemundo TV.  She has also since been interviewed and featured in many newspapers. Lyzbeth has a Professional band and dancers and is ready and available to perform. She is a native of Meriden, CT, of Puerto Rican descent, who has worked very hard to release this album on her own as an independent artist.  Lyzbeth is an experienced singer who has previously performed in shows like Vale Mas with Marcano, Voces en Funcion with Loubriel in P.R. and a couple of times at the well known Sabado Gigante Show with Don Francisco in Florida. Winning also the best song award at the Voice and Song Festival in Puerto Rico when she was only 16 years old.

Joel Sanchez Creció disfrutando la música de su época… Salsa, Merengue, Baladas/Boleros, MENUDO, Ballads, R&B, Club Music, Rock/Heavy Metal, etc. Un Género que al principio no le gustaba era la música de Trío, la consideraba música de persona adultas y la asociaba con los Domingos -el día antes de regresar a la escuela-. Irónicamente, Joel menospreciaba lo que hoy ama tanto, él aprendió a valorar este género y la letra romántica de los grupos como el Trio Los Panchos y el Trío Los Condes, para nombrar a algunos.  Cantar era algo que solía hacer en privado hasta que conoció a Edwin Velez, a quien Joel le da crédito por estimularlo a compartir su amor por la música.  Joel, Edwin Velez y el cuatrista virtuoso y guitarrista Joe Diaz fundaron el Trío Los Bohemios. Lo demás como se dice es Historia. Hoy Joel comparte el escenario con músicos diestros y sobre todo buenos seres humanos. Los Bohemios cubren una amplia selección de géneros musicales, reflejando sus influencias y la trascendencia de cada uno de sus miembros.   Joel le da gracias a Dios por poner en su camino a personas como Edwin Velez, Joe Diaz, Edwin Rios, Esteban Arrufatt y Alfred Gonzalez y quiere reconocerlos por fomentar su desarrollo musical durante los últimos 8 años.

Growing up he enjoyed the music of his times… Salsa, Merengue, Balada/Boleros, MENUDO, Ballads, R&B, Club Music, Rock/Heavy Metal, etc. One Genre he did not like growing up was TRIO “oldies”.  He consider it old people music and associated this type of music with Sundays – Domingo Para Recordar - also the day you had to go back to school.  Interestingly, Joel despised then what today he loves so much. Joel learned to appreciate the sound and romantic lyrics of the Trio Groups like Trio Los Panchos and Trio Los Condes to name a few.  Singing was something he kept to himself until he met Edwin Velez whom Joel credits for encouraging him share love of singing with others. Joel, Edwin Velez and Cuatrista virtuoso/Guitarist, Joe Diaz founded Trio Los Bohemios.  The rest as they say is history. Today, Joel shares the stage with great musicians and most important great human beings. Los Bohemios now covers a wide range of musical genres which reflects the group’s influences and background of each of their member.   Joel thanks God for making Edwin Velez, Joe Diaz, Edwin Rios, Esteban Arrufatt and Alfred Gonzalez part of his life and would like to acknowledge them for his musical development for the past 8 years.

Javier Colón Javier Colon nació en 1978 en Stratford, Connecticut. Hijo de padre Dominicano y madre Puertorriqueña. El fue a la escuela secundaria de Stratford donde empezó a escribir canciones. Luego él siguió tras su diploma en educación musical de la Hartt School en la Universidad de Hartford. Javier fue miembro del EmcQ, The Derek Trucks Band y ha trabajado en conjunto con muchos músicos antes de lanzarse como solista. Del 2002 hasta el 2006, Colon firmó con la disquera Capitol Records, junto a quienes grabó dos producciones: la primera titulada con su nombre Javier en 2003 y la segunda Left of Center en 2006. En el 2006 pasó a ser un artista independiente abriendo su propia compañía, Javier Colon Music. In 2011, he was the winner of the inaugural season of the U.S. television show on NBC, The Voice, receiving $100,000 and signing a recording contract with Universal Republic Records. He released two albums with Capitol Records, the first the self-titled Javier in 2003, and the second entitled Left of Center in 2006.Javier has performed with such diverse acts as Joss Stone, Darius Rucker, the Indigo Girls, Stevie Nicks, Adam Levine, and Anthony Hamilton, and recorded an EP on his own label, Javier Colon Music. Jeannette DeJesus Desde Enero de 2011 es Comisionada Adjunta del Departamento de Salud Pública y Consejera especial del Gobernador de CT sobre la Reforma de Cuidado de Salud, posición a nivel de gabinete. Previamente fue Presidenta y CEO del Concilio de la Salud Hispana por 8 años, donde lideró los esfuerzos para mejorar la salud y el bienestar social de Latinos y otros diversos grupos. Tiene 20 años de experiencia en el manejo de programas, desarrollo de pólizas, investigación y evaluación, liderazgo y defensa; además de trabajar en el campo de salud pública, justicia social, educación y desarrollo económico. Recientemente, fue Vicepresidenta de la Asociación de Hospitales de CT y Director Ejecutivo y Vicepresidente Ejecutivo de la National Conference for Community and Justice. De 1995 a 1999, fue Coordinadora del Programa de Crisis de Violaciones del Hospital St. Vincent de Nueva York. Ha co-presidido la Fuerza de Trabajo de Tabaco Sustinet y la Comisión de Equidad de Salud. Trabajó  en la Junta de Directores del Hospital de Hartford, la Corporación de Cuidados de Salud de Hartford, Voces para los Niños de Connecticut y la Fundación de Salud Pública de CT.  Tiene una Maestría en Trabajo Social de la Universidad de Nueva York y en Administración Pública de la Universidad de Harvard.

From January 2011 she is Deputy Commissioner of the Department of public health and Special Adviser of the Governor of CT on health care reform, a cabinet-level position. She previously was President and CEO of the Hispanic Health Council for 8 years, where she led efforts to improve the health and social well-being of Latinos and other groups. She has 20 years of experience in the management of programs, policies, research and assessment, leadership development and defense; In addition to working in the field of public health, social justice, education and economic development. Recently, She is Vice President of the Hospital Association of CT and Executive Director and Vice President of the National Conference for Community and Justice. From 1995 to 1999, she was coordinator of the program “Crisis and violations” at St. Vincent Hospital of New York. She has co-chaired the Sustinet Tobacco Work Force and the Commission of Health Equity. She worked for the Hartford Hospital’s Board of  Directors, the Health Care Corporation of Hartford, Voices for children in Connecticut and the Foundation of Public Health in CT. She has a master's degree in Social work, University of New York and in Public Administration from Harvard University

Rory Angulo Nacido y criado en Perú, Rory migró a México en 1988 donde se graduó de la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. Luego de graduarse, llegó a los Estados Unidos a fines de los 90’s. En EE.UU. Rory trabajó en áreas donde nunca se hubiese imaginado. De repartidor de periódicos a cuidador de mascotas. Luego se presentó de voluntario para el Departamento de Salud de la ciudad de Hartford. En 1998,  decidió progresar su carrera en el campo de salud, entró al programa de Maestría de Salud Publica en la Universidad de Connecticut. Adicionalmente, estudió y se graduó con el título de Administración de Negocios (MBA) en la Universidad de Hartford, graduándose de ahí en el 2004. Rory fue el coordinador del programa de inmunizaciones de la ciudad de Bridgeport (2001) y East Hartford (2001-2004). También es el ex presidente de la Asociación de Profesionales Peruanos Americanos (APAPRO). Actualmente trabaja con el Departamento de Salud Pública del Estado de Connecticut como epidemiólogo en el programa de monitoreo del SIDA. Rory y su esposa disfrutan ver crecer a sus dos hijas.

Born and raised in Peru, Rory migrated to Mexico in 1988 where he graduated from Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana school of medicine. After graduation, he migrated to the USA in the late 90’s. In the U.S., Rory held a variety of jobs he never imagined he could ever have. From newspaper delivery guy to pet sitter. He later volunteered at a local health department in the city of Hartford. In 1998, he decided to continue furthering his career in the health field. He entered the Master’s of Public Health program at the University of Connecticut. Additionally, he pursued another degree at the University of Hartford, graduating in 2004 from the Master’s in Business Administration (MBA). He was the immunization program coordinator for the city of Bridgeport (2001) and East Hartford (2001-2004). He is former president of the Association of Peruvian American Professionals (APAPRO). He currently works for the Connecticut Department of Public Health, as an epidemiologist in the HIV/AIDS Surveillance program. Rory and his wife enjoy watching their two daughters grow up.

María L. Palomares Los últimos dos años, María L. Palomares viene trabajando para el Hospital Johnson Memorial (JMH) como Coordinadora Social de la Comunidad y Navegadora de Recursos para los Pacientes. María coordina los programas de cáncer (educacionales y de control) que benefician a la comunidad con un enfoque en los de bajos recursos o sin seguro de salud. Muchos Latinos se benefician de estos programas. Sabiendo lo difícil que es tratar con el sistema de cuidado de salud, ella ayuda a pacientes con cáncer a encontrar información acerca de temas finánciales, grupos de apoyo, programas de vindicación, y conectando a gente a organizaciones como la Sociedad Americana de Cancer (ACS). Ella ayuda a que la gente elija la mejor opción de medicare. Trabaja en la Agencia North Central Area en la junta directiva de envejecientes. Su contribución ayuda a que las agencias reciban ayuda estatal y federal para asistir a las comunidades más necesitadas. María esta también certificada como Navegadora de Pacientes; recibió esta certificación del Harold P. Freeman Institute en Harlem, NY. María recibió el premio Nancy Pilver Breast Cancer Heroin de parte del congresista John Larson en el 2006.

For the last two years, Maria L. Palomares has been working at Johnson Memorial Hospital (JMH) as Community Outreach Coordinator & Patient Resource Navigator. Maria coordinates cancer programs (educational and screening) that benefit the community with focus on the underinsured or uninsured; Latinos often belong to this group.  Knowing how difficult is navigating the health care system she assists cancer patients in finding resources that help with a variety of topics like financial, support groups, advocacy programs, and connecting people with organizations like the American Cancer Society (ACS). She helps people navigate the Medicare structure to select the best Medicare option for her clients. She serves in the North Central Area Agency on Aging board of directors.  Her input assists to allocate State and Federal funds to agencies that provide support to underserved communities, including Latino communities. Maria is also a certified Patient Navigator, she gain this certification from the Harold P. Freeman institute in Harlem, N.Y.Maria received the Nancy Pilver Breast Cancer Heroine Award from Congressman John Larson on December 2006.

Félix Viera Félix Viera nació en Ponce, Puerto Rico y se trasladó a Connecticut en el año 1973. Tomó Cursos de Comunicación en la Universidad de Hartford, donde inició su práctica en las comunicaciones en 1978. En el año 1974 inicia su trabajo en el Departamento de Vehículos de Motor, sirviendo a esta empresa por un periodo de 25 años. Ingresa a los medios de comunicación en 1978 en la WWUH 91.3 FM de la Universidad de Hartford. En 1995 es contratado por la estación Latino 1230, donde produjo los programas: “Añoranzas de Mi Tierra” y “Mi Tierra Y Mi Corazón”. Las parrandas navideñas en los hogares fue otro proyecto exitoso que inició ese mismo año, con el firme propósito de rescatar cultura hispana. Luego en 1999 ingresa a la WPRX1120 AM La Puertorriqueñísima, donde trabaja actualmente. Es el creador del Programa Hablando en Serio, segmento de orientación que lleva más de 12 años en el aire. Ha sido reconocido por numerosas organizaciones por su aporte a la comunidad. En la actualidad Félix tiene una agenda agresiva con agencias claves en la comunidad como DCF, el Sistema Judicial, Las oficinas de Seguro Social y Child Support Division, entre otros. Con más de 25 años en los medios de comunicación continúa con el compromiso de seguir trabajando en favor de la comunidad. Félix Viera está felizmente casado con Priscilla Viera, tiene  6 hijos y 7 nietos.

Felix Viera was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico and later moved to Connecticut in the year 1973. He took communication courses at the University of Hartford, where he began his work in the communications field in 1978. In the year 1974 he began working for the Department of Motor Vehicles, serving them for 25 years. He entered the media world in 1978 working for the FM WWUH of the University of Hartford. In the year 1995 he was hired by the station Latino 1230, where he produced the shows “Añoranzas de mi Tierra” and “Mi Tierra y mi Corazón.” The Christmas parrandas was another successful project of his, with the purpose of rescuing our culture. Later in the year 1999, he began working for the station WPRX 1120 AM. In this station he started the show “Hablando en Serio”, a show that has been on air for the past 12 years. He has been recognized for his help to the community. Felix has an aggressive agenda with key agencies such as DCF, the Judicial System, the Social Security office and the Child Support Division. With over 25 years of experience in the media, Feliz continues working for the community. Felix is happily married to Priscilla Viera. He has 6 children and 7 grandchildren.

Yvonne Nava Yvonne Nava es la co-presentadora del noticiero matutino de NBC Connecticut. Ella se sumo al equipo en Diciembre del 2007. Yvonne comenzó su carrera a la corta edad de 18 años, reportando para Telemundo en su pueblo de Laredo, Texas. Luego paso a ser presentadora para KACB en San Angelo, Texas. Su próximo paso la llevo a KCBD en Lubbock, Texas, donde fue la presentadora de las noticias de fin de semana. A continuación en Tennessee ella ayudo a crear un noticiero matutino de fin de semana en la estación WATE en Knoxville. En el 2005 Yvonne se mudo a Miami y fue ahí donde trabajo de reportera en la WPLG. Yvonne cubrió todo tipo de eventos desde crímenes y huracanes a Fidel Castro. Ella es graduada de la Universidad de Texas en Austin con diplomas en Periodismo y Negocios. En la universidad fue reconocida por el Hispanic Magazine por ser una modelo ejemplar para Latinas. Ella es miembro activa de la Asociación Nacional de Periodistas Hispanos y es voluntaria del West Hartford Support Group para el Capitulo de Connecticut de la Asociación Americana de Enfermedad de Parkinson’s.

Yvonne Nava is the weekday morning as co-anchor of NBC Connecticut News. She joined the station in December 2007. Yvonne began her career at age 18, reporting for Telemundo in her hometown of Laredo, Texas. She then went on to anchor at KACB in San Angelo, Texas. Her next move took her to KCBD in Lubbock, Texas, where she anchored the weekend evening news. Then it was off to Tennessee at WATE in Knoxville, where she helped launch the station's weekend morning newscast. She soon left the mountains of Tennessee for the beaches of sunny south Florida. In 2005, she joined WPLG in Miami as a breaking news reporter and fill-in anchor. Yvonne covered everything from crime and hurricanes to Fidel Castro. Yvonne graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with degrees in broadcast journalism and business. In college, she was recognized by Hispanic magazine for being an outstanding role model for Latinas. She is an active member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and volunteers with the West Hartford Support Group for the Connecticut chapter of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association.

Sandra Moreno Sandra nació en Santurce, Puerto Rico. Su destino en el mundo de las comunicaciones parecería haber estado escrito cuando al hacer la practica de 4to. año fue asignada a trabajar para WIPR – TV Canal 6 en Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. A pesar de que ya había hecho sus pininos en el ramo de las Leyes, ingresó a la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón y estudió Comunicaciones.  Ya sintiéndose lista para enfrentar el reto se mudó a Connecticut, donde fue contratada por la ya desaparecida Super 94, WLVH. Años después al surgir la venta de esta estación recibió una oferta para trabajar en WRYM 840 AM. Decide después de algún tiempo regresar a Puerto Rico, y se une al equipo de trabajo de WAPA Radio. Regresa a Estados Unidos, y se instala en Nueva York, donde laboró para las estaciones WADO Reloj, Amor 93.1 FM y luego Univision Radio.  En Connecticut fungió durante años como Directora de Programación de WLAT–Latino 1230 AM, mientras ejercía como Asistente del Coordinador en ESPN Deportes Radio. Actualmente conduce un programa de variedades en Mega 910 de 10:00 am a 1:00 pm., donde comparte con una amplia audiencia su Amor Por El Arte Radial.

Sandra was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Her involvement in the world of communications appeared to be pre-destined since during her 4th year of studies she was assigned to work for WIPR – Channel 6 in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. Even though she had done her studies in Law, she attended the University of Sacred Heart and studied Communications. When she felt ready to get her career started she moved to Connecticut, where she was hired by the former Super 94 WLVH. Years later she received an offer to work for WRYM 840 AM. After a while there she decided return to Puerto Rico where she joined WAPA Radio. She then returns back to the United States and settles in New York where she works for the stations WADO Reloj, Amor 93.1 FM and later Univision Radio. In Connecticut she worked for years as the Programming Director of WLAT – Latino 1230 AM, while she also served as Coordinative Assistant for ESPN Deportes Radio. She currently hosts a variety show at MEGA 910 from 10 to 1 pm where she shares with the audience her love for radio.

Imna Arroyo Natural de Puerto Rico, Arroyo se desempeña como Profesora de Artes de la Universidad del Este del Estado de Connecticut, donde preside el Departamento de Artes Visuales. Estudió en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas del Instituto de Cultura en San Juan, PR, obteniendo su BFA del Instituto Pratt en Brooklyn, NY y su MFA en la Universidad de Yale en New Haven, CT. Ha servido en comités tanto nacionales como internacionales.  Su servicio incluye haber sido Presidente del Comité Nacional de la Mujer para el Arte (1996-98),  representante de la Organización no-gubernamental (ONG) ante las Naciones Unidas para el Comité Nacional de la Mujer para el Arte; delegada en el Comité ONG de Viena sobre la condición jurídica y social de la mujer y la Cuarta Conferencia Mundial sobre la mujer y el Foro ONG en Beijing, China; y  Comisionada  de Asuntos Culturales de la Ciudad de New Haven (1986-1996).  En Willimantic, ella es una de los miembros fundadores de la Galería y Centro de las Artes de Windham, pertenece al Panel de Directores y preside el Comité de Consulta de la Galería. Ayudó a formar el Collectivo Mestizal, grupo Caribeño y Latinoamericano, cuya misión es la de promover las artes, educación y cultura latina en la región.

A native to Puerto Rico, Arroyo is currently a Professor of Art at Eastern Connecticut State University where she chairs the Visual Arts Department. She studied at La Escuela de Artes Plasticas de Insituto de Cultura in San Juan, PR, obtained her BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and her MFA from Yale University in New Haven, CT. She has served on national and international committees. Her service includes serving as President for the national Women’s Caucus for Art (1996-98), Non Governmental Organization (NGO) Representative to the United Nations for the national Women’s Caucus for Art; delegate to the Vienna NGO Committee on the Status of Women and the Fourth United Nations World Conference on Women/NGO Forum in Beijing, China; and Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for the City of New Haven (1986-1996). In Willimantic, she is one of the founding members of the Windham Art Center and Gallery; she serves on the Board of Director’s and chairs the Gallery Advisory Committee. She also helped to form the Collectivo Mestizal, a Latin American and Caribbean group whose mission is the promote Latino arts, education and culture in the region.

Luz Ramos Nativa de Puerto Rico, Luz Alexandra Ramos es actriz y figura de televisión. Comenzó su carrera como bailarina de Ballet Folklórico en el Primer Ballet Nacional de Puerto Rico. Con gran talento participó en telenovelas en Puerto Rico y en Estados Unidos. Luego se convirtió en miembro activo del gremio de actores y cultivó su talento en películas independientes y largometrajes como Next Stop Wonderland, The Newcomers, Blue in the face, True Lies and The women. Ha hecho 75 películas de la industria y videos de entrenamiento, en español e inglés, y numerosas grabaciones para clientes de compañías como AT&T, Cigna, IBM, United Way. Ha sido presentadora del noticiero nocturno de una Estación de Red de Afiliados, ha trabajado con ESPN nacional e internacionalmente, en el lanzamiento de ESPN Deportes y es la primera mujer puertorriqueña en la historia del deporte en transmitir un partido de la NFL para ESPN desde el terreno de juego. Ella es una exitosa productora, directora y oradora pública, creó un programa de cocina internacional y un video de ejercicios. Fundadora y Directora del “The New England Actors Group”, que ofrece servicios de actuación, videos y entrenamiento de cámara para los interesados en el cine y la televisión en CT. Luz está casada y es madre de tres hijos.

Native of Puerto Rico, Luz Alexandra Ramos is actress and television figure. She began her career as a dancer of a folkloric ballet in the first National Ballet of Puerto Rico. With great talent, she participated in soap operas in Puerto Rico and United States. She became an active member of the group of actors and developed her talent in independent films and feature films such as Next Stop Wonderland, The Newcomers, Blue in the face, True Lies and The women. She has made 75 industry films and videos of training in Spanish and English, and numerous recordings for clients of companies like AT & T, IBM, Cigna, United Way. She has been anchor of the newscast of a network station affiliates, she has worked with ESPN nationally and internationally, at the launch of ESPN Sports and she is the first Puerto Rican woman in the history of the sport to broadcast a live game in the NFL for ESPN. She is a successful producer and director, public speaker, created a program of international cuisine and a video of exercises. Founder and Director of the "The New England Actors Group, that offers performance, videos and training camera for those interested in cinema and television in CT. Luz is married and mother of three children

Carlos Hernández Chávez Nació en León, Guanajuato, México, llegó a Hartford en 1967. Empezó su entrenamiento riguroso en el arte en la Academia de San Carlos y el Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes en México. En 1964, fue elegido como asistente de murales en el Museo Nacional de Antropología en la Ciudad de México. Entre los premios recibidos está el ser el primer Individual Artist Grant del Comisionado de Artes de Connecticut. El premio a Inmigrantes del Año en el 2003 de parte del CT Immigrant and Refugee Coalition;  El premio de Justicia Social del Charter Oak Cultural Center en el 2005 y Certificados de Reconocimiento de del Gobernador y Representantes de CT. Junto a su fallecida esposa Georgie, Carlos fue padre adoptivo por muchos años, luego adoptando a cinco niños que se agregaron a los cuatro que ya tenía. Una parte significante de su trabajo artístico y personal ha sido reconocido por su contenido social y la defensa de los derechos humanos y dignidad. Sus trabajos están exhibidos permanentemente en Puerto Rico, México, Gran Bretaña, Grecia y los Estados Unidos. Es también un elogiado fotógrafo y músico.

Born June 7, 1943 in León, Guanajuato, México. Considered by The Hartford Courant the 'first Mexican in Connecticut' upon his arrival to Hartford in 1967, Hernández Chávez underwent his rigorous arts training at the Academia de San Carlos and the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico. In 1964 and while a student, he was chosen to be a mural assistant at the then new National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. His commitment and extensive work in the arts and the community for over four decades has been recognized in many occasions. Among the awards bestowed upon him are the first Individual Artist Grant from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. The 2003 Immigrant of the Year Award from the CT Immigrant and Refugee Coalition; the 2005 Social Justice Award from the Charter Oak Cultural Center; and recognition certificates from the Governor and the U.S. Representative from CT. Together with his late first wife Georgie, Carlos served as a foster parent for many years, later adopting five children to add to his own four. A significant portion of his artistic and personal work has been recognized for its social content and its defense of human rights and dignity, with its clear, self-improvement call for action message to the viewer. Carlos' easel and mural works have been exhibited and are in permanent collections in Puerto Rico, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Greece and the United States. The artist is also an acclaimed photographer and musician. He lives in Hartford.

Mary L. Sanders Nacida en New Britain, Mary aprendió el español de bien joven y empezó a trabajar en el Spanish Speaking Center desde 1973. Por más de 30 años ella trabajó además para varias organizaciones sin fines de lucro en New Britain como consejera, líder y coordinadora de programas. De esta manera ella ayudó a cientos de estudiantes a seguir carreras exitosas. En 1998 Mary regresó a trabajar al Centro Hispano y es ahora la directora ejecutiva. Ella ha diseñado servicios y entrenado a su personal a que asistan con las necesidades de la comunidad. También es defensora de la justicia social y una entrenadora del control de la violencia, certificada por TRYBE, PaxEducare y el CT Center for Non-Violence. Mary recibió el Premio de Servicio Comunitario de Daugthers of Black Pride of Elks en el 2004, el de Líder Comunitaria del Año en el 2006, de parte del periódico El Registro y el premio Iola Choice del New Britain NAACP en el 2009 en reconocimiento a su trabajo a favor de la justicia y las oportunidades sociales y económicas de la gente. Mary reside en Hartford con su hija y su nieta.

A New Britain native, Mary learned Spanish while young and began working at the Spanish Speaking Center in 1973. For more than 30 years she has worked for various non-profits in New Britain, as counselor, case manager, workshop leader and program coordinator. As a career counselor and workshop leader, Mary has assisted hundreds of her students to move into successful careers. Returning to the Spanish Speaking Center 13 years ago and now serving as the Executive Director, Mary has been able to design services and train staff to be responsive to the changing and growing community needs.  She is an advocate for social justice and a certified non-violence trainer thru TRYBE, PaxEducare and the CT Center for Non-Violence. Mary received Community Service awards from the Daughters of Black Pride of Elks in 2004, Registro’s Community Leader of the Year in 2006 and the Iola Choice Award from the New Britain NAACP in 2009 in recognition of her commitment to justice and to social & economic opportunities for all people.  Mary resides in Hartford with her daughter and grand-daughter.

Andy Hart Andy Hart nació y se crió en la ciudad de Hartford. Es graduado de la secundaria Northwest Catholic y de la Universidad de Fairfield, donde se especializó en Historia. En 1986 empezó a trabajar en Harland, Tine & White Advertising como redactor. En 1989, empezó su carrera periodística como reportero del Glastonbury Citizen, donde trabajo por tres años, subiendo al puesto de Editor Asistente. Como todo periódico pequeño, el Citizen le pidió que tomara sus propias fotos y fue ahí que nació su pasión por la fotografía. En 1992, Andy comenzó a trabajar con The Hartford News. Aunque su puesto original era como vendedor de avisos, pronto empezó a escribir artículos y tomar sus propias fotos para el periódico. En 1999 pasó a ser Editor del Hartford News. Guiado por el dicho “una foto vale más que mil palabras”, decidió que la mejor manera de cubrir una ciudad tan grande como Hartford era a través de la fotografía. Sabiendo que el Hartford News buscaba cubrir todo los grupos étnicos, Andy y su cámara se han vuelto familiares en los variados eventos que se ofrecen en la ciudad, muchos de ellos de la comunidad latina. En el 2010, la Librería Pública de Hartford eligió a Andy para enseñar fotografía en su series “Arts and Archives: Master Classes in the Arts and Humanities for Older Adults”.

Andy Hart was born and raised in the city of Hartford. He is a graduate of Northwest Catholic High School and Fairfield University, where he majored in history. In 1986 he began working at Harland, Tine & White Advertising as a copywriter. In 1989, he started his journalism career as a reporter for the Glastonbury Citizen. He worked at the Citizen for three years and rose to the position of Assistant Editor. Like most small newspapers, the Citizen required its reporters to shoot their own photographs. Andy learned quickly and photography soon became one his hobbies as well as a part of his job. In 1992, Andy began working at The Hartford News. Although originally hired as an advertising sales representative, Andy was soon shooting pictures and writing stories for the paper as well. In 1999, Andy became managing editor of The Hartford News. Guided by the dictum, "A picture is worth a thousand words," he decided that the best way that a paper as small as The Hartford News could cover a city as large and diverse as Hartford was through photography. Because the paper strives to cover all of Hartford's various ethnic groups, Andy and his camera became a familiar sight at events throughout the city.  In 2010, the Hartford Public Library chose Andy to teach the photography portion of its "Arts and Archives: Master Classes in the Arts and Humanities for Older Adults" series.

John DeStefano Jr. Nacido en Mayo de 1955 en New Haven, Connecticut. En 1994 John se convirtió en el Alcalde Nº 49 en la historia de la ciudad de New Haven. El está ahora cumpliendo su noveno término como Alcalde. DeStefano ha trabajado duro y exitosamente mejorado el sistema de escuelas públicas, creando un centro de la ciudad vibrante y diversa, una base económica competitiva, fuertes vecindarios y una comunidad que goza de valores tradicionales y una tolerancia social. El Alcalde DeStefano ha también peleado a favor de los derechos de los inmigrantes, implementando la tarjeta de residencia “Elm”, la cual sirve como tarjeta de identificación y provee acceso a los servicios públicos a todos los residentes de la ciudad. DeStefano ha formado parte de la Conferencia de Municipalidades de Connecticut y la Liga Nacional de Ciudades como presidentes en ambos. En el 2006, fue candidato demócrata a Gobernador del estado de Connecticut. John es graduado de la Universidad de Connecticut. Está casado con Kathy DeStefano y es padres de dos hijos.

Born in May 1955 in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1994 John became the 49th Mayor of the city of New Haven. He is now serving his 9th term in office. DeStefano has worked hard and successfully to strengthen the academic achievement of public school students, to build a vibrant mixed used city center, a competitive economic base, strong neighborhoods and a community culture of traditional values and social tolerance. Mayor DeStefano has fought for immigrant rights, implementing the Elm City Resident Card that provides identification cards and access to public services for all residents of the city. Mayor DeStefano has served as the President of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities and the National League of Cities. In 2006 he was the Democratic candidate for Governor of the state. He is a graduate of the University of Connecticut. DeStefano is married to Kathy DeStefano and is the father of two sons.

Lorella Praeli Nacida en Ica, Perú, Lorella se mudó a los Estados Unidos a los 10 años. Ella se graduó de la Universidad de Quinnipiac en el 2011 con un Bachillerato de Artes en Ciencias Políticas y Sociología. Se graduó con los honores mas altos, Summa Cum Laude. Entre los premios que ha recibido se encuentra el Rachel Ranis Prize en Justicia Social y el College of Arts and Sciences Award por sus logros especiales. El año pasado (2010) ella co-fundó la organización estudiantil Connecticut Students for a Dream (C4D), la que busca proteger los derechos de los estudiantes indocumentados y a sus familias en Connecticut. Nacionalmente está involucrada en United We Dream y es una de tres líderes que buscan crear un nuevo programa nacional (Dream Educational Empowerement Program), en el cual desarrollarán programas y entrenamientos para 40 grupos afiliados. Sus intereses personales son las actividades comunitarias y de desarrollo profesional. Le gusta también tratar con temas de justicia social, como la inmigración y en específico a la ayuda de jóvenes inmigrantes indocumentados.

Originally from Ica, Peru. Moved to the United States at the age of 10.  Received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Sociology from Quinnipiac University in 2011.  Graduated Summa Cum Laude (with the highest honor: 3.95 out of a 4.0 scale GPA). Lorella was the recipient of various prizes, such as: the Rachel Ranis Prize in Social Justice and the 2010-2011 College of Arts and Sciences Award for Special Achievement. Last year she co-founded Connecticut Students for a DREAM, a student organization that seeks to advocate for the rights of undocumented students and their families in Connecticut and to raise awareness about the issues they face. Nationally, she is involved with United We Dream and Dream Educational Empowerement Program where she will be developing programs and trainings with 40 affiliate groups across the United States. My personal interests, community activities, and professional development have been focused around issues of social justice, such as immigration and specific to undocumented immigrant youth and young adults).

Inez Vera Nacida en Puerto Rico en 1989. Inez está estudiando para su masterado en Desarrollo Estudiantil y Educación de Consejera en el Central Connecticut State University. Ella es actualmente una interna graduada en el Departamento de Actividades Estudiantiles y Desarrollo de Liderazgo (SALD) en el Student Center de CCSU. Ella siempre ha enfocado su trabajo en la promoción de la diversidad y la igualdad humana. Entre sus méritos están el haber recibido una mención de honor del Presidente de CCSU en el 2011, recibió la beca 21st Century de diversidad al igual que el premio C. Wrights Mills, otorgado por el departamento de Sociología. Ella ha sido voluntaria por 4 años en Pathway Senderos como mentora de jóvenes en las áreas de New Britain y Hartford. Inez es también miembro activa de la Organización de Estudiantes Latinoamericanos (LASO) en CCSU, donde ha servido como secretaria, vice presidenta y presidenta. Ella también trabaja en conjunto con colegios secundarios dando discursos sobre la importancia de la educación universitaria.

Born in Puerto Rico in 1989. Inez is a graduate student in the Master’s program in Counselor Education and Student Development in Higher Education at Central Connecticut State University and currently serves as a graduate intern in the Student Activities and Leadership Development Department (SA/LD) in the Student Center. She has always worked towards a commitment to diversity and equity. Among her accomplishments as student are; receiving the 2011 President’s Citation Award at CCSU, being awarded the 21st Century Diversity Scholarship as well as the 2010 C. Wrights Mills Award by the Sociology Department. She volunteered for 4 years with Pathways Senderos, mentoring young people in the New Britain and Hartford areas. She is also an active member of the Latin American Student Organization where she has served as Secretary, Vice President and President. Inez also does outreach with local high schools, giving speeches on the importance of higher education.

Luis Gonzalo Revilla Luis Gonzalo Revilla es un estudiante Senior de Altos Honores de East Hartford High School.  Ha recibido varios reconocimientos de sus maestros como diplomas por sus logros académicos y fue nombrado “Estudiante Sobresaliente del Año en Matemáticas”. Se encuentra envuelto en el campo de la televisión siendo el productor de su propio programa en Telemundo, llamado “Two Zona”, donde cada semana presenta diversos temas de entretenimiento sobre tecnología, películas, juegos de video, etc. Luis afirma que esa es su pasión y disfruta lo que hace.  En el futuro desea convertirse en actor y productor y tiene como meta completar un grado de Maestría en Cinematografía y Producción de Películas.  Recientemente se unió al grupo de Ingeniería Aeroespacial de su escuela donde visitan diferentes aeropuertos y aprenden sobre las diferentes aeronaves del lugar, como el F-15.  También produce videos para su escuela, recibiendo el reconocimiento de su Director y maestros.  Su otra pasión es la música, tocar el piano y se encuentra tomando clases de coro en su escuela.  Revilla está siempre retándose a sí mismo y cumpliendo sus metas en la vida.

Luis Gonzalo Revilla is a High Honor Senior student from East Hartford High School. Have received awards from the teachers such as diplomas for completing Academic Achievements and was naming "Outstanding Math Student of the Year". He’s also involved on TV, been the producer of his own TV show aired on Telemundo, called "Two Zona" where every week present entertainment, such as technology, movies, video games, etc. Luis affirms that this is his passion and love doing that. In the future, he would like to become an actor and producer and his goal is to complete a Master's degree in Cinematography and Film Production. He recently joins an Aerospace Engineering group at the school where they visit different airports and learn more about the aircrafts they have there, such as F-15s. He also produced videos for the school, receiving the recognition from the Principal and teachers of the school.  Another passion is the music, playing the piano and now is taking choir classes at school. Revilla is always challenging himself and achieving his dreams in life.

Luis RosaLa familia Rosa se mudó de Puerto Rico a New Haven en 1991. Por la última década su sueño fue el construir un gimnasio. Ellos decidieron  abrir uno en el área más necesitada, fue por eso que escogieron a Fair Haven, el corazón de la comunidad latina en la ciudad. El gimnasio es una institución sin fines de lucro. Con la ayuda de entrenadores adultos, los Rosas trabajan con niños de 10-18 años, cinco a seis horas diarias, seis días a la semana. Están aplicando para un préstamo para poder ofrecer las clases de box gratuitamente a todos los niños menores de 17. Luis Rosa empezó boxeando en Puerto Rico y pasó a ser profesional a la edad de 18. Su carrera renació en el Ring One Boxing, bajo la supervición del entrenador Brian Clark, quien le ayudó a darle vuelta su vida. Ahora, luego de haber enseñado en Hamden por siete años, Rosa ha creado su propia reputación enderezando las vidas de muchos jóvenes, quienes ya están peleando como amateurs.

The Rosas moved to the New Haven area from Puerto Rico in 1991. For the last decade, they’ve been dreaming about building their own gym. They decide to build one where they felt it was needed most, in Fair Haven, in the heart of the city’s Latino community. The gym is not for profit. With the help of a few adult trainers, the Rosas serve kids ages 10 -18, five to six hours a day, six days a week. They’re applying for money so that they can meet their goal of letting all kids under 17 box for free. Rosa started boxing in Puerto Rico and went pro at age 18. His career was reborn at Ring One Boxing on Congress Ave, under trainer Brian Clark. Clark helped Rosa turn his life around and got him started training younger kids. Now, after coaching in Hamden for six years, Rosa has built his own track record of shaping young boxers’ lives.

Shabazz Napier Nacido en 1991, Shabazz es el base del equipo de Baloncesto de la Universidad de Connecticut. Napier, quien es de descendencia Puertorriqueña, lideró al equipo de UConn a un campeonato nacional en el 2011 en solo su primer año. A pesar de su falta de experiencia, Napier recibió bastantes valiosos minutos como base suplente del equipo. Con la partida de Kemba Walker, ahora será Napier quien lidere al equipo y será uno de los firmes candidatos a Jugador del Año en el Big East. El año pasado, Shabazz fue elegido al equipo de los mejores novatos del Big East. Napier quien tiene sangre Puertorriqueña a través de su madre (Carmen Velasquez), ha visto la posibilidad de jugar baloncesto para la selección de Puerto Rico. Antes de ir a UConn, él fue al Charlestown High School en Charlestown, Massachusetts. Shabazz tiene dos hermanos, Timmie Barrows y Titana Velasquez.

Born in 1991, Shabazz is the point guard for the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team. Napier, who is of Puerto Rican heritage, led the Uconn team to a National Championship in 2010 in only his rookie year. Despite his lack of experience, Napier was trusted to play big minutes at back-up point guard for the Huskies. With the departure of Kemba Walker, Shabazz is now the leader of the team and is one of the candidates for Big East player of the year. Last year he was selected to the Big East All-Rookie team but he has his sights on bigger things. Napier who has Puerto Rican blood through his mother (Carmen Velasquez) has entertained the idea of playing basketball for the Puerto Rican national team. Before UConn he attended Charlestown High School in Charlestown, Massachusetts. Shabazz has two siblings, Timmie Barrows and Titana Velasquez.

Andrés Vargas Heredia Nació en Bogotá, Colombia. Desde pequeño estuvo involucrado en los deportes, animado por su padre que fue un gran atleta. A los 11 años agarró por primera vez una raqueta de squash, empezó jugando en el club, luego torneos de squash regionales, nacionales e internacionales. Como juvenil representó a Colombia en Sudamericanos y Panamericanos. A los 18 años obtuvo medalla de oro a nivel sudamericano y de plata en los Juegos Panamericanos. Terminando su secundario aplicó al Trinity College de Hartford, había oído hablar de su gran equipo de squash y llegó en el 2007 para estudiar y jugar. En los cuatro años de estudios tuvo una brillante actuación, siendo Campeón Universitario de todo EE.UU. y nombrado “All-American” los 4 años consecutivos, Rookie del Año en su primera temporada y recibió el “James Montano Award” en Trinity por su espíritu de liderazgo en el equipo de squash. Capitán del equipo de squash durante la temporada 2010-11. Al mismo tiempo ha seguido representando a Colombia en torneos internacionales. Al margen del deporte se graduó en Estudios Hispánicos e Internacionales, y piensa sacar su Maestría en Public Policy. Actualmente trabaja como Asistente del equipo de Squash y tenis del Trinity College.

Born in Bogota, Colombia. Andres has been involved in sports from an early age, pushed by his father who himself was a great athlete. At the age of 11 he grabbed his first squash racquet and began playing at the club. He later competed in regional, national and international squash tournaments. As a youngster he represented Colombia in the South American and Pan-American games. At the age of 18 he obtained a gold medal in the South American games and a silver one in the Pan-American competition. After concluding his high school studies he applied to the Trinity College in Hartford, having heard of their great squash team, and joined the team in 2007. In his four years of studying he had a stellar career, winning the National Championship in all four years as well as also being an All-American in each of those years. He was rookie of the year in his first season and received the James Montano Award for his leadership spirit with the squash team. Andres was captain of the team in his last season. During his time at Trinity he continued representing Colombia at International competitions. He graduated with a Hispanic and International Studies degree and is pursuing his Masters in public policy. He currently works as assistant of the Squash and Tennis teams in Trinity College.

Carmen B. Dosal Carmen B. Dosal nació en Ponce, Puerto Rico. Obtuvo su diploma de Escuela Superior en el Liceo Ponceño y su Bachillerato en la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Llegó a Hartford en el año 1989 y formó parte del Concilio Hispano de la Salud en el 1990.  En el Concilio ocupó diferentes posiciones como Coordinadora del Programa de Ayuda a Padres, en la Unidad de Prevención de Abuso Infantil, Unidad de Salud Familiar y su último cargo como Directora de Servicios a la Familia y Jóvenes. En el 2003 se unió a Catholics Charities en el Instituto de la Familia Hispana como Directora de Desarrollo de Programas y Servicios Comunitarios. Es la Directora del Centro Hispano para Ancianos y Directora del Centro de Desarrollo y Reafirmación Familiar. Ha dedicado su carrera profesional a la promoción de la salud y el bienestar entre los miembros de la comunidad de Hartford.

Carmen B. Dosal was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. She obtained High School Diploma from El Liceo Ponceno and her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Puerto Rico. Arrived in Hartford in 1989 and became a staff of the Hispanic Health Council in 1990. At the Council she occupied different positions among them Coordinator for the Parent Aide Program, Child Abuse Prevention Unit, Family Health Unit and her last position as Director of Family and Youth Services. In 2003 joined Catholic Charities at the Institute for the Hispanic Family as Director of Program Development and Community Services. She is the Director of the Hispanic Senior Center and the Director of El Centro de Desarrollo y Reafirmacion Familiar. She has devoted her professional career to the promotion of health and wellness among the members of the Hartford community.

Juanita Espinosa Nació en Gurabo, Puerto Rico en 1942. Se graduó en Negocios del Welton College en Caguas. Su primer trabajo fue como secretaria en Bilford Corporation, donde estuvo 11 años y otros 9 en Westinghouse Corp. en control de calidad. Siendo madre soltera con 3 hijos y viendo el futuro de sus hijos se vino con ellos a Hartford en 1977 y es donde vive actualmente. A los dos años de llegar se casó con Benjamín García. Siempre pensado en sus hijos estuvo en las luchas para conseguir maestros bilingües en Hartford, dio sus testimonios en Washington. Tiene la dicha de que sus 3 hijos son profesionales. Cuando su esposo quedó sin trabajo, compraron un carro rodante y sirvieron por 3 años desayuno y almuerzo, hasta que compraron el Restaurant  Bean Pot en la Park Street y lo convirtieron hispano, trabajaron ahí por 15 años. Su labor comunitaria es incansable, pertenece a SAMA, ahora como voluntaria en distintas tareas. Participa en las campañas de distrofia muscular y autismo para recaudar fondos. Y su otra gran vocación es la Iglesia Lady of Sorrows con la que está 21 años, es Ministro de Eucaristía y pertenece a la Asociación de la Virgen de la Providencia, Patrona de PR.

Born in Gurabo, Puerto Rico in 1942. She graduated from Welton College en Caguas with a degree in Business. Her first job was as secretary of Bilford Corporation, where she was at for 11 years and another 9 at Westinghouse Corp doing quality control. Being a single mother of 3 children and looking out for the future of her kids, she moved to Hartford in 1977. Two years after arriving in this country she married Benjamin Garcia. Always with her kids on mind, she fought hard to establish bilingual teachers in Hartford, even giving testimonies in Washington. All three of her children are now professionals. When her husband became unemployed, they both bought a trailer home and served breakfast and lunch from there for 3 years. They later went on to buy the Restaurant Bean Pot in Park Street and they turned into a Hispanic establishment, working there for 15 years. Her community work is long and arduous. She is a member of SAMA, serving as voluntary in various areas. She participates in the campaigns to raise funds for muscular dystrophy and autism. Her other great vocation is her work at the Our Lady of Sorrows church where she has been working for 21 years. She is a minister of eucharist and is part of the Association of the Virgen de la Providencia.

Héctor M. Torres, Jr. Héctor es fundador, presidente y gerente ejecutivo del Connecticut Hispanic Yellow Pages, establecido en 1989 como las primeras páginas amarillas hispanas en Nueva Inglaterra. La empresa publica tres directorios con una distribución total de más de 120,000 copias llegando a más de 430,000 hispanos en Connecticut y Massachusetts. El señor Torres es también director de Torres & Associates, una firma de mercadeo y relaciones publicas enfocada en el mercado Hispano. También fue Director de Desarrollo Económico para la Cámara de Comercio de Greater Hartford (1985-1992) y Planificador principal de la ciudad de Hartford (1979-1985). Ha formado parte de varias juntas de directores y comités de consejo incluyendo: La Casa de Puerto Rico, The Spanish Merchants Association (SAMA), The Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce, CT Capitol Region Growth Council y el Millennium Advisory Committee. Además hace de presentador, panelista y organizador en varias conferencias con temas relacionados a las viviendas, desarrollo económico, desarrollo de negocio, liderazgo y otros. Torres es graduado del Hartford Public High School (1975), tiene un diploma de bachillerato en Desarrollo Comunitario del Springfield College (1979) y un Masterado en Administración Pública de la Universidad de Hartford (1985).

Hector is founder, president and CEO of The Connecticut Hispanic Yellow Pages established in 1989 as the first Hispanic Yellow Pages in New England. The company publishes three (3) directories with a total distribution of over 120,000 copies reaching more than 430,000 Hispanics in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Mr. Torres is also principal of Torres & Associates, a marketing and public relations firm focusing on the Hispanic market. Mr. Torres also served as Director of Economic Development for the Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce (1985 – 1992) and as Principal Planner for the City of Hartford (1979 – 1985). Over the years, Mr. Torres has served on numerous Boards of Directors and advisory committees including: La Casa de Puerto Rico, The Spanish Merchants Association, The Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce, CT Capitol Region Growth Council and The Millennium Advisory Committee. Mr. Torres also serves as presenter, panelist and organizer of various workshops and conferences on the subjects of housing, economic development, business development, leadership and others. Mr. Torres is a graduate of Hartford Public High School (1975). He holds a Bachelors Degree in Community Development from Springfield College (1979) and a Masters Degree in Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Hartford (1985).
